Rudra Mantra
Shiva
ॐ नमो भगवते रुद्राय ।
§
Translation
Salutations to the revered Rudra (Shiva).
Insight
A powerful mantra for protection and to invoke the fierce form of Shiva.
Significance
Rudra is the fierce, storm-associated aspect of Shiva found in the Vedas, most famously in the Rudram hymn of the Yajurveda, which this short invocation echoes. Where Shiva is often approached as the gentle ascetic, Rudra represents the destructive force that clears away what is harmful - illness, fear, and negative influences - to make room for renewal. This brief namaskara (salutation) is used as a quick, protective invocation, commonly chanted in the early morning or on Mondays, the day traditionally associated with Shiva worship, either on its own or as an opening line before longer Shiva stotras.
