आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् ।
जयावहं जपं नित्यमक्षयं परमं शिवम् ॥
Translation
This holy hymn to the Sun-God, Aditya Hridayam, destroys all enemies, brings victory, is eternal, and bestows supreme auspiciousness.
Insight
Significance
According to the Ramayana's Yuddha Kanda, the sage Agastya taught this hymn to Lord Rama as he stood exhausted on the battlefield, facing Ravana. Agastya tells Rama that reciting the Aditya Hridayam - a hymn to Surya, the Sun-God - will destroy his enemies and bring him victory, and Rama recites it before ultimately defeating Ravana. Beyond its role in that story, the hymn is treated as a source of physical and mental strength, resilience, and clarity, and is commonly recited at sunrise, especially on Sundays, by those seeking courage before a difficult task or challenge.
