The Difference Between Meditation and Prayer: A Spiritual Analysis
Prayer is talking to the Divine, while meditation is listening to the Divine. Understand the deep difference between the two and how they transform our consciousness.
Prayer: Asking and Expressing Gratitude
Prayer typically begins with a sense of 'Duality'. In prayer, the one who is praying (devotee) and the one being prayed to (God) are separate entities. Here, the dialogue is mostly one-way. We express our sorrows, ask for strength, or offer thanks for every gift received.
It is a beautiful way to unburden the mind. When the weight of life becomes too heavy, prayer provides the comforting realization that a higher power is taking care of us.
However, most people only pray when they need something. The highest form of prayer is one where we ask for absolutely nothing, only expressing pure love and gratitude.
Meditation: Listening and Becoming Silent
If prayer is 'speaking', then meditation is 'listening'. In meditation, we do not ask for anything, we do not imagine anything, nor do we even necessarily assign a specific form to the Divine. We just descend into our inner silence.
When our prayer concludes and the deep peace that is left behind remains, that is the very beginning of meditation. Meditation is the experience of 'Non-duality' (Advaita)—where the devotee and the Lord, the part and the whole, become one.
In meditation, the mind gradually comes to a halt. We become the witness (Sakshi) of our thoughts. It is only in this profound stillness that we find the greatest truths of the universe and the real answers to all our questions.
Finding The Balance Between The Two
On the spiritual path, prayer and meditation are like the two wings of a bird. Many people think they will cross the ocean of life by adopting just one, but together they complete our consciousness.
Prayer purifies the heart and bows the ego down (Devotion). Once the heart is purified, consciousness expands through meditation (Awareness).
The correct sequence is: first calm the noise of the mind through prayer and surrender everything to the Divine. Then, linger in the ensuing void and peace; that is the moment of meditation. That is the exact moment when God converses with you.
