श्लोक
Verse 1
श्रीरामचन्द्र कृपालु भजु मन हरण भवभय दारुणम्। नवकंज लोचन कंजमुख कर कंज पद कंजारुणम्॥
Transliteration:
Śrīrāmacandra kṛpālu bhaju mana haraṇa bhavabhaya dāruṇam | Navakañja locana kañjamukha kara kañja pada kañjāruṇam ||
Translation:
O mind, worship the compassionate Sri Ramchandra, the destroyer of the terrible fear of worldly existence — whose eyes are like a fresh lotus, whose face, hands and feet are like the reddish lotus.
Meaning:
This opening verse calls the mind to devotion, describing Lord Ram's gentle, compassionate form and praising him as the remover of the deepest fear — the fear of the cycle of birth and death.
Verse 2
कन्दर्प अगणित अमित छवि नवनील नीरज सुन्दरम्। पटपीत मानहुँ तड़ित रुचि शुचि नौमि जनक सुतावरम्॥
Transliteration:
Kandarpa agaṇita amita chavi navanīla nīraja sundaram | Paṭapīta mānahu taḍita ruci śuci naumi janaka sutāvaram ||
Translation:
Possessing the beauty of countless Cupids, lovely as a fresh blue lotus, wearing a yellow garment that shines like lightning — I bow to him, the pure and beloved husband of Sita, Janak's daughter.
Meaning:
This verse praises Ram's incomparable beauty and radiance, comparing him to a blue lotus and describing his luminous yellow garment, while honoring him as Sita's beloved husband.
Verse 3
भजु दीनबन्धु दिनेश दानव दैत्यवंश निकंदनम्। रघुनन्द आनन्दकन्द कोसलचन्द दशरथनन्दनम्॥
Transliteration:
Bhaju dīnabandhu dineśa dānava daityavaṃśa nikandanam | Raghunanda ānandakanda kosalacandra daśarathanandanam ||
Translation:
Worship him, the friend of the humble, the sun among kings, the destroyer of the demon and Daitya clans — the joy of the Raghu dynasty, the very root of bliss, the moon of Kosala, the beloved son of Dashrath.
Meaning:
This verse calls Ram the protector of the humble and the vanquisher of evil, while celebrating him as the source of joy for his kingdom of Kosala and his father Dashrath.
Verse 4
सिर मुकुट कुण्डल तिलक चारु उदार अङ्ग विभूषणम्। आजानुभुज शर चाप धर संग्राम जित खरदूषणम्॥
Transliteration:
Sira mukuṭa kuṇḍala tilaka cāru udāra aṅga vibhūṣaṇam | Ājānubhuja śara cāpa dhara saṅgrāma jita kharadūṣaṇam ||
Translation:
Wearing a crown, earrings and a graceful tilak, his generous form adorned with fine ornaments; his arms reaching to his knees, bearing bow and arrow, the one who defeated the demons Khara and Dushana in battle.
Meaning:
This verse describes Ram's majestic, ornamented royal form as a warrior-prince, and recalls his victory over the demons Khara and Dushana, showing his strength alongside his grace.
Verse 5
इति वदति तुलसीदास शङ्कर शेष मुनि मन रञ्जनम्। मम हृदयकंज निवास कुरु कामादिखलदल गञ्जनम्॥
Transliteration:
Iti vadati tulasīdāsa śaṅkara śeṣa muni mana rañjanam | Mama hṛdayakañja nivāsa kuru kāmādikhaladala gañjanam ||
Translation:
So says Tulsidas — O you who delight the hearts of Shankar, Sheshnag and the sages, O destroyer of the wicked hosts of lust and other vices, come and dwell in the lotus of my heart.
Meaning:
In this closing verse, Tulsidas signs the hymn and prays that Ram, who is cherished even by Shiva and the great sages, would dwell in his heart and cleanse it of desire and other vices.
