श्लोक
Verse 1
आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम्। जयावहं जपेन्नित्यम् अक्षय्यं परमं शिवम्॥
Transliteration:
Ādityahṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam | Jayāvahaṃ japennityam akṣayyaṃ paramaṃ śivam ||
Translation:
The Aditya Hridayam is sacred and destroys all enemies. One who recites it daily gains victory; it is imperishable and supremely auspicious.
Meaning:
This opening verse introduces the hymn as a sacred prayer to the Sun that grants victory and removes obstacles, spoken to encourage daily recitation.
Verse 2
आदित्यं शरणं गच्छ भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम्। वेदान्तिनं जगत्कर्तारं वयं पूजयामहे॥
Transliteration:
Ādityaṃ śaraṇaṃ gaccha bhāskaraṃ bhuvaneśvaram | Vedāntinaṃ jagatkartāraṃ vayaṃ pūjayāmahe ||
Translation:
Take refuge in the Sun, the illuminator, the lord of all worlds. We worship him, who is described in the Vedanta as the creator of the universe.
Meaning:
This verse encourages taking refuge in Surya Dev as the supreme illuminator of all worlds, worshipped as the very creator described in Vedic wisdom.
Verse 3
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वदुःखनिवारणम्। सर्वारोग्यकरं देवं सर्वशोकविनाशनम्॥
Transliteration:
Sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalyaṃ sarvaduḥkhanivāraṇam | Sarvārogyakaraṃ devaṃ sarvaśokavināśanam ||
Translation:
He is the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, the remover of all sorrows, the bestower of all health, the destroyer of all grief.
Meaning:
This verse describes Surya Dev's benevolent powers — bringing good fortune, removing suffering, granting health, and dissolving grief.
Verse 4
आदित्यस्य नमस्कारं ये कुर्वन्ति दिने दिने। जन्मान्तरसहस्रेषु दारिद्र्यं नोपजायते॥
Transliteration:
Ādityasya namaskāraṃ ye kurvanti dine dine | Janmāntarasahasreṣu dāridryaṃ nopajāyate ||
Translation:
Those who bow to the Sun day after day will not experience poverty even across a thousand future lifetimes.
Meaning:
This verse praises the far-reaching benefit of consistent daily reverence to the Sun, promising lasting prosperity across many lifetimes.
Verse 5
एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च। कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव॥
Transliteration:
Enamāpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāreṣu bhayeṣu ca | Kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścinnāvasīdati rāghava ||
Translation:
O Raghava (Ram), no person who glorifies him (the Sun) in times of danger, hardship, difficult terrain, or fear ever succumbs to despair.
Meaning:
Spoken directly to Lord Ram by sage Agastya, this verse assures that remembering the Sun in moments of danger or fear gives strength and prevents despair.
Verse 6
एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम्। एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा॥
Transliteration:
Evamuktvā tato'gastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam | Etacchrutvā mahātejā naṣṭaśoko'bhavattadā ||
Translation:
Having said this, sage Agastya departed the way he had come. On hearing this, the greatly radiant Ram became free from all sorrow.
Meaning:
This closing verse narrates how, after receiving this teaching from Agastya, Ram was freed of despair and renewed in strength before his decisive battle.
