1

Verse 1

सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथं च श्रीशैले मल्लिकार्जुनम्। उज्जयिन्यां महाकालमोङ्कारममलेश्वरम्॥

Transliteration:

Saurāṣṭre somanāthaṃ ca śrīśaile mallikārjunam | Ujjayinyāṃ mahākālam oṅkāram amaleśvaram ||

Translation:

Somnath in Saurashtra (Gujarat), Mallikarjuna in Shrisailam (Andhra Pradesh), Mahakal in Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), and Omkareshwar - the pure lord (Madhya Pradesh).

Meaning:

This verse mentions the first four Jyotirlingas and their sacred locations across India.

Verse 2

परल्यां वैद्यनाथं च डाकिन्यां भीमशङ्करम्। सेतुबन्धे च रामेशं नागेशं दारुकावने॥

Transliteration:

Paralyāṃ vaidyanāthaṃ ca ḍākinyāṃ bhīmaśaṅkaram | Setubandhe ca rāmeśaṃ nāgeśaṃ dārukāvane ||

Translation:

Vaidyanath in Parli/Deoghar (Jharkhand), Bhimashankar in Dakini (Maharashtra), Rameshwar at Setubandha (Tamil Nadu), and Nageshwar in Darukavana (Gujarat).

Meaning:

This verse describes four more Jyotirlingas - Vaidyanath, Bhimashankar, Rameshwaram, and Nageshwar.

Verse 3

वाराणस्यां च विश्वेशं त्र्यम्बकं गौतमीतटे। हिमालये तु केदारं घुश्मेशं च शिवालये॥

Transliteration:

Vārāṇasyāṃ ca viśveśaṃ tryambakaṃ gautamītaṭe | Himālaye tu kedāraṃ ghuśmeśaṃ ca śivālaye ||

Translation:

Vishweshwar in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Tryambakeshwar on the banks of Gautami river (Maharashtra), Kedarnath in the Himalayas (Uttarakhand), and Grishneshwar near Shivalaya (Maharashtra).

Meaning:

This verse completes the list of 12 Jyotirlingas with the last four sacred shrines.

Verse 4

एतानि ज्योतिर्लिङ्गानि सायं प्रातः पठेन्नरः। सप्तजन्मकृतं पापं स्मरणेन विनश्यति॥

Transliteration:

Etāni jyotirliṅgāni sāyaṃ prātaḥ paṭhen naraḥ | Saptajanmakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ smaraṇena vinaśyati ||

Translation:

One who recites these Jyotirlingas morning and evening, their sins accumulated over seven births are destroyed by mere remembrance.

Meaning:

This verse emphasizes the purifying power of reciting the names of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Verse 5

एतेषां दर्शनादेव पातकं नैव तिष्ठति। कर्मक्षयो भवेत्तस्य यस्य तुष्टो महेश्वरः॥

Transliteration:

Eteṣāṃ darśanād eva pātakaṃ naiva tiṣṭhati | Karmakṣayo bhavet tasya yasya tuṣṭo maheśvaraḥ ||

Translation:

By the mere darshan (sight) of these Jyotirlingas, no sin remains. One whose Lord Maheshwara is pleased attains the destruction of all karmas.

Meaning:

Visiting or even visualizing these sacred shrines destroys all sins and karmic bonds when Lord Shiva is pleased.

Verse 6

द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग स्तोत्रं यः पठेत् शिवसन्निधौ। शिवलोकमवाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते॥

Transliteration:

Dvādaśa jyotirliṅga stotraṃ yaḥ paṭhet śivasannidhau | Śivalokam avāpnoti śivena saha modate ||

Translation:

One who recites this hymn of the twelve Jyotirlingas in the presence of Shiva attains Shivaloka and rejoices with Lord Shiva.

Meaning:

The final fruit of reciting this stotra is attaining the abode of Lord Shiva and experiencing eternal bliss with Him.
