The thousand names of Lord Vishnu from Mahabharata
शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्। प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये॥
Śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śaśivarṇaṃ chaturbhujam | Prasannavadanaṃ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye ||
I meditate upon Lord Vishnu, who wears white garments, who is of the color of the moon, who has four arms, and whose face is pleasant, for the removal of all obstacles.
विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः। भूतकृद्भूतभृद्भावो भूतात्मा भूतभावनः॥
Transliteration:
Viśvaṃ viṣṇur vaṣaṭkāro bhūta bhavya bhavat prabhuḥ | Bhūta kṛd bhūta bhṛd bhāvo bhūtātmā bhūta bhāvanaḥ ||
Translation:
He is the universe, Vishnu, the sacred offering, the lord of past, present and future. He is the creator of beings, their sustainer, existence itself, the soul of all beings, and their maintainer.
Meaning:
The first verse contains the opening names describing Vishnu as the all-pervading reality, creator, sustainer, and essence of all existence across time.
पूतात्मा परमात्मा च मुक्तानां परमा गतिः। अव्ययः पुरुषः साक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञोऽक्षर एव च॥
Transliteration:
Pūtātmā paramātmā ca muktānāṃ paramā gatiḥ | Avyayaḥ puruṣaḥ sākṣī kṣetrajño'kṣara eva ca ||

He is the pure soul, the supreme soul, the highest goal of the liberated. He is imperishable, the cosmic person, the witness, the knower of the field, and the immutable one.

योगो योगविदां नेता प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः। नारसिंहवपुः श्रीमान् केशवः पुरुषोत्तमः॥

Yogo yogavidāṃ netā pradhāna puruṣeśvaraḥ | Nārasiṃha vapuḥ śrīmān keśavaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ||

He is yoga itself, the guide of yoga practitioners, the lord of primordial nature and consciousness. He has the form of Narasimha, is full of glory, has beautiful hair, and is the supreme person.
Meaning:
These names honor Vishnu as the essence and teacher of yoga, supreme over matter and spirit, the Man-Lion incarnation, glorious, and the highest being.
सर्वः शर्वः शिवः स्थाणुर्भूतादिर्निधिरव्ययः। सम्भवो भावनो भर्ता प्रभवः प्रभुरीश्वरः॥
Transliteration:
Sarvaḥ śarvaḥ śivaḥ sthāṇur bhūtādir nidhir avyayaḥ | Sambhavo bhāvano bhartā prabhavaḥ prabhur īśvaraḥ ||
Translation:
He is all, the archer, auspicious, immovable, the origin of beings, the treasure, imperishable. He is the source, the creator, the supporter, the originator, the master, and the supreme lord.
Meaning:
These names describe Vishnu's all-pervading nature, His perfect stillness, role as creator and source, His inexhaustible abundance, and supreme lordship.
स्वयम्भूः शम्भुरादित्यः पुष्कराक्षो महास्वनः। अनादिनिधनो धाता विधाता धातुरुत्तमः॥
Transliteration:
Svayambhūḥ śambhur ādityaḥ puṣkarākṣo mahāsvanaḥ | Anādi nidhano dhātā vidhātā dhātur uttamaḥ ||
Translation:
He is self-existent, bestower of happiness, radiant like the sun, lotus-eyed, with a great voice. He is without beginning or end, the ordainer, the dispenser, the supreme element.

Aprameyo hṛṣīkeśaḥ padmanābho'maraprabhuḥ | Viśvakarmā manus tvaṣṭā sthaviṣṭhaḥ sthaviro dhruvaḥ ||
Translation:
He is immeasurable, the lord of the senses, lotus-naveled, lord of the immortals. He is the architect of the universe, the cosmic mind, the divine craftsman, the most ancient, the elderly, and the immovable.

These names describe Vishnu as beyond measure, controller of senses, creator and architect of the cosmos, and the eternal unchanging reality.
अग्राह्यः शाश्वतः कृष्णो लोहिताक्षः प्रतर्दनः। प्रभूतस्त्रिककुब्धाम पवित्रं मङ्गलं परम्॥
Transliteration:
Agrāhyaḥ śāśvataḥ kṛṣṇo lohitākṣaḥ pratardanaḥ | Prabhūtas trikakubdhāma pavitraṃ maṅgalaṃ param ||
Translation:
He is ungraspable, eternal, Krishna (dark-hued or all-attractive), red-eyed, the destroyer. He is abundant, the support of the three worlds, the purifier, the auspicious, and the supreme.

ईशानः प्राणदः प्राणो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठः प्रजापतिः। हिरण्यगर्भो भूगर्भो माधवो मधुसूदनः॥
Transliteration:
Īśānaḥ prāṇadaḥ prāṇo jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prajāpatiḥ | Hiraṇyagarbho bhūgarbho mādhavo madhusūdanaḥ ||
Translation:
He is the ruler, the giver of life, life itself, the eldest, the best, the lord of creatures. He is the golden womb, the womb of the earth, the consort of Lakshmi, and the slayer of Madhu.
Meaning:
These names describe Vishnu as the supreme controller, source of all life, primordial being, creator, and destroyer of the demon Madhu.
ईश्वरो विक्रमी धन्वी मेधावी विक्रमः क्रमः। अनुत्तमो दुराधर्षः कृतज्ञः कृतिरात्मवान्॥
Transliteration:
Īśvaro vikramī dhanvī medhāvī vikramaḥ kramaḥ | Anuttamo durādharṣaḥ kṛtajñaḥ kṛtir ātmavān ||
Translation:
He is the lord, the valorous, the wielder of the bow, the wise, valor itself, the orderly progression. He is unsurpassed, unconquerable, the knower of deeds, the doer, and self-possessed.

सुरेशः शरणं शर्म विश्वरेताः प्रजाभवः। अहः संवत्सरो व्यालः प्रत्ययः सर्वदर्शनः॥

Sureśaḥ śaraṇaṃ śarma viśvaretāḥ prajābhavaḥ | Ahaḥ saṃvatsaro vyālaḥ pratyayaḥ sarvadarśanaḥ ||
Translation:
He is the lord of the gods, the refuge, the happiness, the seed of the universe, the origin of creatures. He is the day, the year, the serpent, the conviction, and the all-seeing.
Meaning:
These names describe Vishnu as the supreme deity, ultimate refuge, source of joy, cosmic seed, and the all-pervading witness of time and space.
इति श्रीमहाभारते आनुशासनिके पर्वणि मोक्षधर्मे भीष्मयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे विष्णुसहस्रनामस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम्॥
Iti śrī mahābhārate ānuśāsanike parvaṇi mokṣadharme bhīṣma yudhiṣṭhira saṃvāde viṣṇu sahasranāma stotraṃ sampūrṇam ||
Thus ends the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra from the Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva, in the dialogue between Bhishma and Yudhishthira on the path to liberation.
