The thousand names of Goddess Lalita
सिन्दूरारुणविग्रहां त्रिनयनां माणिक्यमौलिस्फुरत् तारानायकशेखरां स्मितमुखीमापीनवक्षोरुहाम्। पाणिभ्यामलिपूर्णरत्नचषकं रक्तोत्पलं बिभ्रतीं सौम्यां रत्नघटस्थरक्तचरणां ध्यायेत्परामम्बिकाम्॥
Sindūrāruṇa vigrāhāṃ trinayanāṃ māṇikya mauli sphurat Tārā nāyaka śekharāṃ smita mukhīm āpīna vakṣoruhām | Pāṇibhyām alipūrṇa ratna chaṣakaṃ raktotpalaṃ bibhratīṃ Saumyāṃ ratna ghaṭastha rakta charaṇāṃ dhyāyet parām ambikām ||
I meditate on the Supreme Mother Ambika, whose body has the hue of vermillion, who has three eyes, whose crown is adorned with the crescent moon, who has a smiling face, whose breasts are full, who holds in Her hands a jeweled cup filled with nectar and a red lotus, who is benign, and whose feet rest on a jeweled pot.
श्रीमाता श्रीमहाराज्ञी श्रीमत्सिंहासनेश्वरी। चिदग्निकुण्डसम्भूता देवकार्यसमुद्यता॥
Transliteration:
Śrīmātā śrīmahārājñī śrīmat siṃhāsaneśvarī | Chidagni kuṇḍa sambhūtā deva kārya samudyatā ||
Translation:
She is the auspicious Mother, the great empress, the sovereign of the glorious throne. She was born from the fire-pit of pure consciousness, and is ever ready to help the gods.
Meaning:
The first verse introduces Lalita as the supreme Mother and empress who arose from the fire of consciousness.
उद्यद्भानुसहस्राभा चतुर्बाहुसमन्विता। रागस्वरूपपाशाढ्या क्रोधाकाराङ्कुशोज्ज्वला॥
Transliteration:
Udyad bhānu sahasrābhā chaturbāhu samanvitā | Rāga svarūpa pāśāḍhyā krodhākārāṅkuśojjvalā ||
Translation:
She shines with the brilliance of a thousand rising suns, has four arms, holds a noose which is the embodiment of desire, and a goad which is the embodiment of anger.
Meaning:
This verse describes Lalita's radiant form with four arms holding symbolic weapons.
मनोरूपेक्षुकोदण्डा पञ्चतन्मात्रसायका। निजारुणप्रभापूरमज्जद्ब्रह्माण्डमण्डला॥
Transliteration:
Mano rūpekṣu kodaṇḍā pañcha tanmātra sāyakā | Nijāruṇa prabhā pūra majjad brahmāṇḍa maṇḍalā ||
Translation:
She holds a bow made of sugarcane (representing the mind), and arrows made of the five subtle elements. The entire universe is immersed in the flood of Her rosy effulgence.
Meaning:
Lalita's weapons symbolize control over mind and senses, and Her radiance pervades all creation.
चम्पकाशोकपुन्नागसौगन्धिकलसत्कचा। कुरुविन्दमणिश्रेणीकनत्कोटीरमण्डिता॥
Transliteration:
Champakāśoka punnāga saugandhika lasat kachā | Kuruvinda maṇi śreṇī kanat koṭīra maṇḍitā ||
Translation:
Her hair is adorned with flowers of champaka, ashoka, punnaga, and saugandhika. Her crown is decorated with rows of rubies.
Meaning:
This verse describes the beautiful adornments of Lalita's hair and crown.
अष्टमीचन्द्रविभ्राजदलिकस्थलशोभिता। मुखचन्द्रकलङ्काभमृगनाभिविशेषका॥
Transliteration:
Aṣṭamī chandra vibhrāja dalika sthala śobhitā | Mukha chandra kalaṅkābha mṛganābhi viśeṣakā ||
Translation:
Her forehead shines like the crescent moon of the eighth day. She has a musk mark on Her moon-like face resembling the spot on the moon.
Meaning:
Lalita's forehead and face are compared to the beautiful moon with its natural mark.
वदनस्मरमाङ्गल्यगृहतोरणचिल्लिका। वक्त्रलक्ष्मीपरीवाहचलन्मीनाभलोचना॥
Transliteration:
Vadana smara māṅgalya gṛha toraṇa chillikā | Vaktra lakṣmī parīvāha chalan mīnābha lochanā ||
Translation:
Her eyebrows form the auspicious archway to the house of Kamadeva (her face). Her eyes move like fish in the stream of beauty flowing from Her face.
Meaning:
This verse poetically describes Lalita's eyebrows and fish-shaped eyes.
नवचम्पकपुष्पाभनासादण्डविराजिता। ताराकान्तितिरस्कारिनासाभरणभासुरा॥
Transliteration:
Nava champaka puṣpābha nāsā daṇḍa virājitā | Tārākānti tiraskāri nāsābharaṇa bhāsurā ||
Translation:
Her nose is as beautiful as a freshly bloomed champaka flower. Her nose-ring outshines the brilliance of the stars.
Meaning:
Lalita's nose and its ornament are described with poetic beauty.
कदम्बमञ्जरीक्लृप्तकर्णपूरमनोहरा। ताटङ्कयुगलीभूततपनोडुपमण्डला॥
Transliteration:
Kadamba mañjarī kḷpta karṇa pūra manoharā | Tāṭaṅka yugalī bhūta tapanoḍupa maṇḍalā ||
Translation:
Her ears are adorned with charming kadamba flower earrings. Her pair of earrings shine like the sun and moon.
Meaning:
This verse describes the beautiful earrings adorning Lalita's ears.
पद्मरागशिलादर्शपरिभाविकपोलभूः। नवविद्रुमबिम्बश्रीन्यक्कारिरदनच्छदा॥
Transliteration:
Padmarāga śilādarśa paribhāvika pola bhūḥ | Nava vidruma bimba śrī nyakkāri radana chhadā ||
Translation:
Her cheeks outshine mirrors made of ruby. Her lips surpass the beauty of fresh coral and bimba fruit.
Meaning:
Lalita's cheeks and lips are described as surpassing precious gems and fruits in beauty.
शुद्धविद्याङ्कुराकारद्विजपङ्क्तिद्वयोज्ज्वला। कर्पूरवीटिकामोदसमाकर्षिदिगन्तरा॥
Transliteration:
Śuddha vidyāṅkurākāra dvija paṅkti dvayojjvalā | Karpūra vīṭikā moda samākarṣi digantarā ||
Translation:
Her two rows of teeth shine like sprouts of pure knowledge. The fragrance of Her camphor-betel attracts all directions.
Meaning:
This verse praises Lalita's teeth and the divine fragrance from Her mouth.
इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डपुराणे उत्तरखण्डे श्रीहयग्रीवागस्त्यसंवादे श्रीललितासहस्रनामस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम्॥
Iti śrī brahmāṇḍa purāṇe uttara khaṇḍe śrī hayagrīvāgastya saṃvāde śrī lalitā sahasranāma stotraṃ sampūrṇam ||
Thus ends the Lalita Sahasranama Stotra from the Brahmanda Purana, in the dialogue between Hayagriva and Agastya.
