ज्ञानिनामपि चेतांसि देवी भगवती हि सा। बलादाकृष्य मोहाय महामाया प्रयच्छति॥
Transliteration:
Jñānināmapi chetāṃsi devī bhagavatī hi sā | Balād ākṛṣya mohāya mahāmāyā prayachchhati ||
Translation:
That Goddess Bhagavati, the great Maya, forcibly draws the minds of even the wise and casts them into delusion.

Transliteration:
Sarvamaṅgala māṅgalye śive sarvārtha sādhike | Śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo'stu te ||
Translation:
O Narayani, salutations to You who are the auspiciousness in all auspicious things, the consort of Shiva, the fulfiller of all objectives, the giver of refuge, the three-eyed one, and the fair one.

Birth of the Goddess
ततो देवाः सहस्राक्षप्रमुखाः ब्रह्मविष्णुभिः। शरणं जग्मुरम्बायाः सर्वे मिलितवीर्याः॥
Transliteration:
Tato devāḥ sahasrākṣa pramukhāḥ brahma viṣṇubhiḥ | Śaraṇaṃ jagmur ambāyāḥ sarve militavīryāḥ ||
Translation:
Then all the gods led by Indra, along with Brahma and Vishnu, combining their energies, took refuge in the Mother.

The gods combine their powers to create the supreme Goddess.

अहं भुवनमखिलं जगदेतच्चराचरम्। उत्पादयामि प्रलये संहरामि च सर्वशः॥
Transliteration:
Ahaṃ bhuvanam akhilaṃ jagad etat charācharam | Utpādayāmi pralaye saṃharāmi cha sarvaśaḥ ||
Translation:
I create this entire universe, both moving and unmoving, and at the time of dissolution, I destroy it completely.

Slaying of Dhumralochana
ततः प्रभृति या देवी महिषासुरमर्दिनी। महिषासुरमर्दिनीति लोके ख्याता बभूव सा॥
Transliteration:
Tataḥ prabhṛti yā devī mahiṣāsura mardinī | Mahiṣāsura mardinīti loke khyātā babhūva sā ||
Translation:
From that time onwards, the Goddess became famous in the world as Mahishasura Mardini (the slayer of Mahishasura).

The Goddess begins Her battle against the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
Slaying of Chanda and Munda
यस्मात्चण्डं च मुण्डं च गृहीत्वा त्वमुपागता। चामुण्डेति ततो लोके ख्याता देवि भविष्यसि॥
Transliteration:
Yasmāt chaṇḍaṃ cha muṇḍaṃ cha gṛhītvā tvam upāgatā | Chāmuṇḍeti tato loke khyātā devi bhaviṣyasi ||
Translation:
Since you have brought Chanda and Munda, O Devi, you shall be famous in the world as Chamunda.
Theme:
Goddess Kali slays the demons Chanda and Munda and receives the name Chamunda.
Slaying of Raktabija
ततो युद्धं समभवत्तीव्रं तत्र सुरासुरैः। देव्या च सकलैः शक्तिभिर्बहुधा भयानकम्॥
Transliteration:
Tato yuddhaṃ samabhavat tīvraṃ tatra surāsuraiḥ | Devyā cha sakalaiḥ śaktibhir bahudhā bhayānakam ||
Translation:
Then a fierce and terrible battle ensued between the gods and demons, and the Goddess with all Her powers fought in many ways.
Theme:
The famous battle with Raktabija, whose every drop of blood creates a new demon.
Slaying of Nishumbha
अहमेवाऽत्र जगति द्वितीया का ममापरा। पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः॥
Transliteration:
Aham evā'tra jagati dvitīyā kā mamāparā | Paśyaitā duṣṭa mayyeva viśantyo madvibhūtayaḥ ||
Translation:
I alone exist here in the world; who else is there besides Me? O wicked one, behold these My powers entering into Me.
Theme:
The Goddess reveals Her supreme oneness, absorbing all Her manifestations.
Slaying of Shumbha
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा। पश्यैतास्त्वं दुष्टबुद्धे मय्येव विशन्ति मद्विभूतीः॥
Transliteration:
Ekaivahaṃ jagatyatra dvitīyā kā mamāparā | Paśyaitāstvaṃ duṣṭabuddhe mayyeva viśanti madvibhūtīḥ ||
Translation:
I alone exist in the world; who else is there besides Me? O evil-minded one, see these My manifestations entering into Me.

Hymn of Praise by the Gods
सर्वस्य बुद्धिरूपेण जनस्य हृदि संस्थिते। स्वर्गापवर्गदे देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥
Transliteration:
Sarvasya buddhirūpeṇa janasya hṛdi saṃsthite | Svargāpavargade devi nārāyaṇi namo'stu te ||
Translation:
O Narayani, salutations to You who dwell in the hearts of all beings in the form of intelligence, and who grant heaven and liberation.
Theme:
The gods praise the Goddess after Her victory, acknowledging Her as the supreme intelligence.
Boons Granted by the Goddess
यदा यदा बाधा देवानां दानवोत्थाभविष्यति। तदा तदावतीर्याहं करिष्याम्यरिसंक्षयम्॥
Transliteration:
Yadā yadā bādhā devānāṃ dānavotthā bhaviṣyati | Tadā tadāvatīryāhaṃ kariṣyāmyari saṃkṣayam ||
Translation:
Whenever trouble arises for the gods from the demons, I shall incarnate and destroy the enemies.
Theme:
The Goddess promises to incarnate whenever needed to protect the righteous.
Fruits of Recitation
इदं स्तोत्रं पठेद्भक्त्या श्रृणुयाद्वापि यः पुमान्। तस्य सर्वाणि कार्याणि सिद्धिं यान्ति न संशयः॥
Transliteration:
Idaṃ stotraṃ paṭhed bhaktyā śṛṇuyād vāpi yaḥ pumān | Tasya sarvāṇi kāryāṇi siddhiṃ yānti na saṃśayaḥ ||
Translation:
One who recites or listens to this hymn with devotion, all his undertakings will undoubtedly be successful.
