5 Key Teachings of Bhagavad Gita and How to Apply Them
The Gita is not just a sermon from a battlefield; it's the ultimate solution to everyone's inner conflicts. Make these 5 principles a part of your daily life to experience profound peace.
Focus on the Action, Detach from the Outcome
The most famous verse of the Gita teaches us that our right is only to do our duty, not to claim its fruits. In today's times, our biggest anxiety stems from the future—'Will I succeed?', 'What will people say?'.
Lord Krishna states that when you let go of worrying about the outcome, all your attention shifts to the quality of your action. This automatically dissolves stress, as you stop trying to control something that isn't even in your hands. Just make your best effort and leave the rest to God.
Practically, when starting any project or task, take a resolution of 'giving my best', and then pour all your energy into the present moment's work without fretting over the end result.
Anger Destroys Memory and Reasoning (Anger Management)
The Gita clarifies that attachment breeds desire; unfulfilled desire leads to anger; anger causes delusion (loss of reasoning), which ultimately leads to a person's downfall. Modern psychology also agrees that in a fit of rage, a person's rational brain simply shuts off.
Whenever you feel anger rising, instead of reacting immediately, take a deep breath and take a 'Pause'. All our wisdom lies within this tiny fraction of a pause.
The Gita teaches us to fight not the situation, but our reaction to it. A person who learns to control his mind and senses becomes like a calm ocean—no matter how many turbulent rivers flow into it, it never exceeds its boundaries.
Equanimity is Called Yoga (Balance in Every Situation)
Maintaining an equal mind in success and failure, joy and sorrow, gain and loss is what is called Yoga. Life never moves in a straight line. If we jump too high in joy, we tend to sink too deep in sorrow.
Being equanimous does not mean we stop feeling emotions; rather, it means we do not become slaves to those emotions. Once we internalize that 'this too shall pass', a deep, immovable peace is born within us.
Carve out some time in your daily routine (perhaps 10 minutes) where you do absolutely nothing. No phone, no talking. Just observe your breath. This meditation practice gives you the strength to stay anchored in this 'Samatvam' (equilibrium) amid the storms of life.
Self-Elevation (Be Your Own Friend)
Lord Krishna says, 'Let a man elevate himself by his own mind, not degrade himself; for the mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well.'
We often expect love and respect from outside, yet all day we entertain negative self-talk and self-doubt. When our mind is controlled, it is our best friend, but when left unbridled, it becomes our absolute worst enemy.
Wake up every morning and say 5 positive affirmations. Be aware of your thoughts (Mindfulness). As soon as a negative thought arises, observe it like a detached witness rather than getting tangled in it.
The Mortal Body and Immortal Soul
This physical body is perishable, but the consciousness (Soul) dwelling within it is immortal. 'Just as a person casts off old garments to put on new ones, the soul casts off old bodies to attain new ones.'
The fear of death is the greatest human fear. When we begin to realize our true identity beyond the physical body, the fear of death and anxiety about aging start to diminish significantly.
This perspective profoundly helps reduce our obsession with material things (money, beauty, status), and inspires us to focus on things that are everlasting—such as love, compassion, wisdom, and selfless service.
